The annual student musical theatre production, Into The Woods, presented by the SCF Musical Theatre Ensemble is enchanting.    SCF Students Organize 9/11 Memorial

State College of Florida music students organized a 9/11 Memorial at the SCF Performance Pavilion on Friday, September 9th to remember those who lost their lives in the terrorists attacks on September 11, 2001. Fall Festival of Music

Join us as we celebrate the debut musical concert of the year featuring SCF Ensembles which include Concert and Chamber Choirs, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Bands and Guitar Ensemble presenting a variety of musical styles.

Come see the musical that has made fans swoon for over 50 years! Join the throng of adoring fans who scream at the mention of the hip-gyrating, Elvis-like superstar Conrad Birdie. When Birdie receives his draft notice from the Army,a publicity stunt to send him off with a kiss from one lucky female fan creates hilarious havoc. With toe-tapping timeless tunes such as “Put On A Happy Face”, “Kids” and “The Telephone Hour” Bye Bye Birdie is sure to provide a memorableand entertaining musical experience!

SCF Symphony Orchestra in Concert
November 15, 2011                        8 p.m.                  Neel Performing Arts Center
Join Conductor Robyn Wilkes and the SCF Symphony Orchestra as they welcome Steve Terry and the Lakewood Ranch High School Orchestra to the Neel Auditorium for a combined evening of musical classics. This program will feature Camille Saint-Saens' Danse Baccanale from Samson and Delilah, "Nimrod" from the Enigma Variations by Edward Elgar, Johannes Brahms' Hungarian Dance No. 5, and Franz Schubert's "Unfinished" Symphony.

Wind Ensemble in Concert
November 17, 2011                        8 p.m.                  Neel Performing Arts Center
The Sarasota High School Wind Ensemble, under the direction of John D. Roseboom, joins Robyn Wilkes and the SCF Wind Ensemble in an evening of concert band music. Enjoy John Philip Sousa's, US Field Artillery March, a new and contemporary work by John Bogenschutz entitled Red Rocks Fanfare, a beautiful setting of Amazing Grace by Frank Ticheli, and the Renaissance inspired wind band favorite Courtly Airs and Dances by Ron Nelson.

Jazz Bands in Concert

SCF Jazz Bands will present an historical anthology of jazz music featuring pieces from the different jazz eras, which include the swing era to the modern era under the direction of Marc Mannino.

Holiday Spectacular Concert

Cel Enjoy the magical sounds of the season from classic holiday selections to contemporary arrangements featuring Concert Choir, Chamber Choir, Guitar Ensemble and Orchestra. Highlights will include "Twas The Night Before Christmas" and Leroy Anderson's "Sleighride" and "Christmas Festival Medley".

Faculty Recital, Thomas Koch, Guitar
January 12, 2012                         8 p.m.                     Neel Performing Arts Center
The concert program will be focused on early 19th century guitar music by Mauro Giuliani as a biographical center, and on music of Latin America as a geographical center. Thomas Koch began his classical guitar studies at age eleven in his native country of Germany. After graduating from two music conservatories with degrees in music education and guitar performance, Thomas traveled to France, Spain, Portugal and Croatia to further expand his horizon in the world of music. Thomas has performed as soloist with many orchestras along Florida’s gulf coast, and he is the founding president of Guitar Sarasota, a non-profit organization that promotes the education, appreciation and cultural significance of the classical guitar.

SCF Chapter of MTNA Benefit Concert
January 19, 2012                        8 p.m.                     Neel Performing Arts Center
SCF music students and faculty will present a recital of vocal and instrumental selections to benefit the State College of Florida chapter of the Music Teachers National Association. MTNA is the oldest professional music organization in the country. All proceeds of this concert will be used to help defray the costs of students traveling to the MTNA conference. Please help support this worthy educational endeavor.

General admission $10, but donations are also accepted!

 

United States Army Band "Pershing's Own" in Concert
February 2, 2012                                    8 p.m.                               Neel Performing Arts Center
The United States Army Band "Pershing's Own" Quintet comprised of members from the illustrious U.S. Army Field Band. Thier goal is to expose the next generation of musicians to professional-standard performances and clinics, the Woodwind Quintet is a prime example of the Army Field Band's ability to enrich a community through musical excellence and educational outreach.

Guest Artist, Michael Baron, Piano and Jeanie Darnell, Soprano
February 9, 2012                        8 p.m.                      Neel Performing Arts Center
Guest artist, Michael Baron, will be joined by Jeanie Darnell, soprano, in celebration of the Liszt bicentennial. In addition to Baron's piano solos, he and Darnell will present songs by Liszt. Baron performs over 40 concerts a year, including annual tours of Europe and engagements throughout the United States, Asia, and South America. Equally at home as a recitalist, a soloist with orchestra, and a chamber musician, Baron commands a diverse repertoire, ranging from Baroque compositions to world premieres of contemporary pieces. Baron received his doctorate in Piano Performance from The Ohio State University. He serves as professor of music and head of keyboard studies at the Bower School of Music at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU). As a concert artist, Darnell has been hailed by critics throughout the United States and Europe for her "wonderfully bell-like tones" (Wertheimer Zeitung). She is in demand as a soprano soloist of major concert and oratorio repertoire and most recently was featured as soloist on the opera pops concert with the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra and in Opera Naples' production of Mozart's "The Magic Flute." Darnell completed her Doctor of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy at the University of Colorado-Boulder.

Wind Ensemble in Concert
February 28, 2012                    8 p.m.                        Neel Performing Arts Center
The SCF Wind Ensemble and conductor Robyn Wilkes welcome composer Christopher Tucker from Dallas, Texas as this year's Tom and Marilyn Steele Composer-in-Residence. Join the Wind Ensemble as they perform Mr. Tucker's Valor of MNC-I March (conducted by Mr. Tucker), Missions STS: Ecceda Terra, and Euphoric Sparks.

Valor of MNC-I March was composed in tribute to the United States military men and women who have served and will serve in Baghdad, Iraq as part of the Multi-National Corps Iraq, Operation Iraqi Freedom. The piece is further dedicated to the composers father Colonel Leo D. Tucker.

Mission STA: Ecceda Terra was composed to honor the American space shuttle program. Ecceda Tera translated means "To exceed the earth." Ecceda also constitutes the first letters of the six shuttles - Endeavor, Challenger, Columbia, Enterprise, Discovery and Atlantis.

Euphoric Sparks is a celebratory composition incorporating musical quotes from George Frederic Handel's Music for the Royal Fireworks, including material from movements Overture, La Paix, Bourree, and La Rejouissance. It can be followed programmatically in relation to emotions felt when fireworks are present (anticipation, elation and excitement).

SCF Symphony Orchestra and Guitar Ensemble in Concert
March 1, 2012                         8 p.m.                         Neel Performing Arts Center
Robyn Wilkes and the SCF Symphony Orchestra and Rex Willis and the SCF Guitar Ensemble welcome composer Christopher Tucker from Dallas, Texas as this year's Tom and Marilyn Steele Composer-in-Residence. The Symphony Orchestra will be performing Mr. Tucker's composition Cement 13 as well as giving the world premiere of Rex Willis' concerto Grosso for Symphony Orchestra and Guitar Ensemble. The concert will conclude with Edvard Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite. This is a concert not to be missed!

Faculty Recital, Marc Mannino, Jazz Guitar
April 19, 2012                        8 p.m.                        Neel Performing Arts Center
  SCF music faculty member Marc Mannino, jazz guitarist, will perform with guest artists. He is the director of Jazz Bands at SCF and has expanded the music curriculum to include more offerings in the jazz, rock and pop genre. Marc Mannino is a graduate of the Florida State University, School of Music with degrees in both Music Performance and Music Education. He earned his Educational Specialists degree by applying existing music research to a real-life classroom setting, proving that music as a reinforcer has the ability to modify behavior. Marc Mannino is also a veteran of the United States Air Force bands and has performed at major jazz and community festivals including Atlanta, Chattanooga, Knoxville, Memphis, Miami and Toronto Canada.

Spring Fling Concert
April 26, 2012                       7 p.m.                         SCF Performance Pavilion
The fourth annual outdoor Spring Fling Concert will be held at the SCF Performance Pavilion with performances by the Guitar Ensemble, Jazz Bands, Chamber and Concert Choirs, Wind Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra. Limited seating available. Bring a lawn chair or blanket. Come celebrate a year of musical accomplishment.
