Spyware and Adware
Spyware is software that is installed on your computer without your knowledge or consent. These programs attempt to collect personal information and interfere with control of your computer functions. Spyware can be downloaded onto your computer through different means including being bundled in shareware or using a copy of a standard Windows dialog box that suggests you take an action that secretly allows the spyware to be downloaded.
Adware is software that displays advertisements on your computer whether or not you have consented. Often adware is also spyware because it displays advertisements based on information it has collected about you. This causes many pop up advertisements while you are using the Internet.
To protect your computer from spyware:
- Enable the security features in your browser.
- Download programs, software and files only from trusted sites.
- Install anti-spyware software and keep it updated.
