SCF Athletes Score Academic & Athletic Awards
Five Named to the NJCAA Distinguished Academic All-American Team(Bradenton, Fla., Dec. 9, 2009) —State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) alumni and St. Louis Cardinals baseball player, Jonathon Rodriguez-Sosa, was named to the 2008-09 National Junior College Activities Association (NJCAA) Distinguished Academic All-American team with a 3.8 grade point average.
A native of Puerto Rico, Rodriguez-Sosa was a sophomore third
baseman at SCF when he became a recipient of the Eddie Award, which is
given to an SCF athlete for dedication, determination and inspiration
to teammates. The award is named in honor of Reverend Eddie Williams, a
former athletics bus driver.
Other SCF students earning athletic honors in the 2008-09 academic year include:
- Gus Schlosser, Suncoast Conference Pitcher and Player of the Year; Florida Community Colleges Activities Association (FCCAA) All Conference Player of the Year; and FCCAA All State and NJCAA Region VIII Player of the Year, baseball.
- Taylor Wrenn, FCCAA All State, NJCAA Region VIII, Suncoast All Conference, baseball.
- Ashlee Sismilich, FCCAA and NJCAA Region VIII All Tournament teams, softball.
Suncoast All Conference players were baseball team members Kelvin
Clark, Jonathan Griffin, Anthony Mitchell , Joshua Renfro, Jonathan
Rodriguez-Sosa, Taylor Wrenn, Dereck Luciano, Hunter Ovens; softball
team members Randi Grimes, Sarah Boyd, Robyn Draper, Kelsey Falcone,
Ashley Brown, Ashlee Sismilich; basketball team members Aaron Mitchell,
Durrell Kern, Andrew Peterson, Khiry Anfield, Timothy Plummer, Shedrick
Haynes; and volleyball team members Brittney Koch, Ameila Levy, and
Erin Dunn.
SCF athletes excelled academically earning a cumulative 3.07 GPA.
SCF’s baseball team earned a 3.32 GPA, ranking fifth among teams in the
NJCAA.
Five SCF athletes were named to the NJCAA Distinguished Academic
All-American team (3.8 GPA or above). Nine are on the NJCAA Academic
All-American team (3.6 GPA or above.) Twenty-three are on the FCCAA
Academic All-State team (3.3 GPA or above). Thirty-one earned Suncoast
Academic All-Conference honors (minimum 3.0 GPA).
