SCF Dental Hygiene Students Excel at Statewide Competition
(Bradenton, Fla., October 20, 2010) — State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) District Board of Trustees recognized Dental Hygiene Program students who excelled at the Florida Dental Hygiene Symposium held in Orlando on Sept. 30 - Oct. 2.
SCF students Jamie Sickler, Laura Grafton-French, Cris Graber and Yudbel Sullivan won second place for a presentation titled, “Glucose Testing in the Dental Office.” The presentation addressed the importance of a dental hygienist’s role in proactively assessing symptoms of high blood sugar for earlier detection of diabetes.
Shannon Aitken also was recognized as recipient of a $500 Florida Foundation of Dental Hygiene Scholarship. She was recognized at the president’s ball held on Friday, Oct. 1, during the symposium. In addition, Jacqueline MacPherson was elected secretary of the Florida Student Dental Hygienist Association.
Pam Kennard, associate professor of dental hygiene, introduced SCF students at the meeting.
"We are pleased when our students excel at the state level because Florida dental hygiene programs often set the bar for the national level," she said.
