Internationally Renowned Singer Sharon Scott to Perform at SCF
(Bradenton, Fla., February 1, 2011) — Internationally renowned singer, actress and playwright Sharon Scott will perform her newest musical, “Just as I Am: The Life, The Times, The Voice of Mahalia Jackson,” at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 21, and Tuesday, Feb. 22, in Neel Performing Arts Center at SCF Bradenton, 5840 26th St. West.
The musical presents the life and times of preeminent late gospel singer Mahalia Jackson. Widely regarded as the greatest gospel singer of all time and one of the most powerful voices ever, Jackson was the first performing artist in history to receive a Grammy Award for gospel music. The inspiring musical, which includes 22 Jackson favorites, follows her rise to fame while dealing with her struggles in the segregated South of the early 20th century.
Scott, a Sarasota resident, debuted “Just as I Am” at The Studio @620 in St. Petersburg after receiving the John Ringling Towers Award in performing arts.
She began her career in New York and has performed throughout the world including North and South America, Australia, Asia and Europe. She also has performed on stage with many notable performers including the late Mr. Alex Haley, author of “Roots.”
A favorite of Sarasota audiences, Scott has appeared in locally in “Ain’t Misbehavin’” and “Nunsense” and has performed in a concert series with the Sarasota Orchestra, formerly the Florida West Coast Symphony.
Scott has been seen in several Off-Broadway productions including “BINGO” and “High Hat Hattie,” a one-woman play based on the life of Hattie McDaniel, the first African-American to win an Oscar for her role as Mammy in “Gone with the Wind.” The idea for “High Hat Hattie” was conceived by Scott who initiated the project and served a key role in writing and premiering the production.
General admission is $10. Tickets are $5 for students and SCF employees. For more information, call the Neel Performing Arts Center box office at 941-752-5252. Maps and directions are online at scf.edu/maps.
