U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan Tours SCF Collegiate School
(Bradenton, Fla., February 23, 2011) — State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) President Dr. Lars A. Hafner welcomed U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan (FL-13) to State College of Florida Collegiate School (SCFCS), located at SCF Bradenton on Wednesday, February 23.
Buchanan met students and teachers during a tour of the innovative school. During an impromptu session in a seventh-grade civics class, Buchanan took questions about health care, the Second Amendment, and changes in Egypt.
“The traditional classroom doesn’t work for every student,” said Buchanan. “I applaud State College of Florida for searching the globe for the best practices for their collegiate school. I was impressed by the school’s efforts to motivate the students and give them the opportunity to excel.”
As the nation’s first college-operated school with middle school students on a college campus, SCFCS offers a revolutionary approach to instilling a “going to college” mindset in sixth and seventh grade students, many of whom are first-generation students.
SCF’s tuition-free public charter school provides students the opportunity to experience a seamless education from middle school to college while receiving personalized attention in a close-knit school setting. Upon graduating from SCFCS, students will simultaneously earn a high school diploma and Associate in Arts (A.A.) college degree.
