SCF Math Olympics Team Ranked First at Statewide Competition
(Bradenton, Fla., May 18, 2011) — State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) Bradenton Math Olympics team was recognized by the SCF District Board of Trustees at a May meeting for being the first SCF Math Olympics team to win first place in the big college division at the statewide competition held in April at the University of North Florida (UNF), Jacksonville.
SCF competed against about 20 teams from community and state college across the state. SCF’s Math Olympics team has a long history of excelling at the competition since 2000. At the day-long competition sponsored by UNF and the Florida Two-Year College Mathematics Association, students participated in team and individual competitions covering all math courses including Calculus II.
SCF members were Brenan Flint, Jian Hao Li, Joseph Comer and Andrew Moffat. Flint also placed second in individual rankings.
The team coaches were Altay Özgener, assistant professor, mathematics, and Dr. Joni Pirnot, professor, mathematics.
