SCF Wins Statewide Honors and Awards at AFC

Graduate Jodi Johnson Honored with Alumni Rising Star Award

(Bradenton, Fla., October 28, 2011) — State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) was recognized with many awards and honors at the Association of Florida Colleges (AFC) Convention held in Naples from Oct. 26-28.

Jodi Johnson, a decorated graduate of SCF, was honored with the LeRoy Collins Distinguished Alumni Rising Star Award at the Presidential Gala Dinner on Oct. 27. Johnson was chosen for the prestigious statewide award representing 28 community and state colleges in Florida. She was presented with a medallion and crystal award and was escorted to the podium by SCF President Dr. Lars A. Hafner. SCF also won the 2011Campus Sustainability Award from the AFC Facilities Commission for promoting sustainability through education, establishing green practices on campus and implementing green building construction.

SCF recently held a recognition ceremony for achieving Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Certification for its first green certified building, the Medical Technology and Simulation Center (MTSC) that opened in August 2010 at SCF Lakewood Ranch. A 1,600-square-foot chiller plant that uses Thermal Energy Storage system to cool the campus during peak times to conserve energy will serve as a learning lab for students in the Energy Technology Management Program. In addition to the new bachelor’s program in energy technology, SCF offers green courses through its noncredit division, Corporate and Community Development.

SCF Professor Dr. Margie Robertson was selected as the 2011 Outstanding Board Member by the AFC Board of Directors for her service and commitment to the AFC. She also received the Unsung Hero Award from SCF’s AFC chapter.

SCF’s public affairs and marketing department won six awards from the 2011 Communications and Marketing Commission competition. First-place awards were in the following categories: Student Handbook/Orientation Guide; Print Advertising; Radio Advertising; and Baseball Athletic Media Guide. SCF also won second place in the Poster and Display/Presentation Board categories.

Rhonda Kitchens, SCF eLearning Librarian, won the 2011 Association of Florida Colleges Learning Resources Commission Exemplary Practice Award for Library Services for SCF’s Instant Invite, a just-in-time user support service for SCF’s online library resources, subject guides and portal. SCF library services was the first in the state to implement it and the College continues to serve as a model for its use. Rhonda Kitchens gave a presentation about the instant invitation at the convention.

Overall, SCF was recognized for the greatest numerical and percentage increase in membership since the previous year. SCF increased membership by 38 percent.
