Two New SCF Bachelor Degrees Approved by State Board

(Bradenton, Fla. Nov. 15, 2011) - State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) won unanimous approval to offer two new baccalaureate degree programs, International Business and Trade and Technology Management, at the Nov. 15, 2011, State Board of Education (SBE) meeting held in Jacksonville, Fla.

The two new programs follow the Florida Department of Education’s recent approval for SCF to add two new concentrations in Gerontology and Nutrition to the Health Services Administration Bachelor of Applied Science degree program.

“We are the same top-performing two-year college we have been for the past 54 years, and with these new Bachelor program approvals our students now have 10 exciting workforce baccalaureate opportunities to stay at SCF and complete their higher education,” said SCF President Dr. Lars A. Hafner.

The new degree programs approved today and the previously approved concentrations are scheduled to start with the fall term 2012. Some prerequisite courses will be available starting in January 2012. Registration information for all Bachelor programs and prerequisite courses will be available at www.scf.edu/Bachelors.

“As with SCF’s other Bachelor degree programs, the International Business and Trade and the Technology Management degrees were developed in response to community and business leaders’ requests,” said Dr. Mike Mears, SCF Vice President for Baccalaureate Programs and Campus Provost, SCF Bradenton.

An indication of strong community support for SCF’s expanded mission to provide locally accessible and affordable workforce baccalaureate degrees can be seen in the almost $1 million the SCF Foundation Inc. has raised for the Bachelor programs.

“Strong support has come from individual donors, businesses and community foundations, including Gulf Coast Community Foundation's most recent gift for our new programs,” Hafner said.

Hafner said that SCF will continue to listen and respond to community requests for new programs both for Associate and Bachelor degrees.
