SCF Baseball Field Receives National Award
(Bradenton, Fla., January 25, 2012) — State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) has received national recognition as the only college or university this year to be awarded the prestigious American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) TURFACE Field Maintenance Award for the Robert C. Wynn Baseball Field at SCF Bradenton.
At the January 25 SCF District Board of Trustees meeting, SCF President Dr. Lars A. Hafner recognized Gary Lewis, SCF groundskeeper, and Matt Ennis, SCF athletic director, for making the award possible, noting that previous ABCA College Division winners include major universities, such as Clemson University and Fresno State, with much larger field maintenance staffs.
SCF’s field was selected for the award by a panel that included industry professionals and groundskeepers from Major League Baseball and National Football League teams. The award recognizes coaches and groundskeepers for maintaining safe and playable surfaces. SCF also was noted for the recent upgrades to the 48-year-old field, including a 10-foot halo around home plate, scoreboard with message center, professional batter’s eye, new brick wall with padding and backstop netting, four-column bricked entryway with iron gates, and redesigned landscaping around the facility.
Tim Hill II, SCF assistant baseball coach and head coach-in-waiting, accepted the award at the recent annual ABCA convention in Anaheim, Calif., attended by more than 4,000 baseball coaches.
Named for SCF’s first National Junior College Athletic Association Hall of Fame head coach Robert Wynn, the field is home to SCF Manatees Baseball and is used for high school showcases and numerous youth camps throughout the year.
SCF will receive $400 from Turface Athletics to spend on field maintenance equipment as well as one ton of Turface MVP product, an infield top dress conditioner that creates a smooth, level and consistent playing surface while helping to prevent rainouts. SCF also will be recognized in publications including the ABCA Coaching Digest, Collegiate Baseball newspaper, and Coaching Management magazine.
