Gary Russell Named Vice President of Academic Affairs
(Bradenton, Fla., July 10, 2013) — State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) announces Gary Russell as the vice president of academic affairs.
Russell, who previously was the associate vice president of academic quality and success, has served at SCF for 30 years. He joined SCF, then Manatee Junior College, in 1983, as an English instructor and was promoted to full professor in 1996.
He has served in many leadership positions including department chair of language and literature from 1987-2011 and division chair for arts and letters from 1990-1992 and again in 1995. He was elected Faculty Senate president in 1999 and from 2001 to 2005.
In 2003, he chaired the Quality Enhancement Committee, which played a key role in helping SCF earn reaccreditation for a full 10 years from the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
He has served as training coordinator for adjunct faculty and as coordinator of the highly successful Summer Bridge Program that assists recent high school graduates in getting a jump start on their college education.
Russell was the recipient of SCF's Vice President's Academic Excellence Award in 2009, the International Exemplary Leadership Award from the Chair Academy in 2006, and the National Institute of Staff & Organizational Development's (NISOD) Excellence in Teaching Award.
Russell has a Master of Arts in English from the University of South Florida.
