SCF Sponsors MLK Day of Service Jan. 20

"A Day On, Not Off"

(Bradenton, Fla., October 10, 2013) — State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) will sponsor a communitywide MLK Day of Service on Monday, Jan. 20, joining a nationwide effort to transform the federal holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. into a day of community service.

Through funding from the Florida Legislature, SCF is providing opportunities for a 2014 MLK Day of Service for community members in Manatee County, focusing specifically on the areas of Bradenton and Palmetto this pilot year. SCF is working with existing community agencies to blend with and enhance already planned events and programs. Up to $10,000 each may be awarded to organizations for service projects that will benefit the community.

“SCF’s role in the MLK Day of Service is testament to its strong ties to the community and provides a unique opportunity for our students to learn about service. We appreciate Rep. Darryl Rouson for steering a portion of the allocation to SCF,” said SCF President Carol F. Probstfeld.

“If you want to be great, be a servant. This captures the essence of the MLK Day of Service. All Americans are challenged to transform what used to be a day of celebration into a Day of Service with corporate, community and faith organizations working side by side to perform public service and live the dream through their actions,” said state Rep. Darryl Rouson.
