SCFCS Student Headed to State Theatre Competition
(Bradenton, Fla., December 2, 2013) — State College of Florida Collegiate School (SCFCS) student AJ Cali qualified to participate in the Florida Thespians State Festival at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center March 26-28 after excelling in the District 6 Thespian Competition.
Cali, president of the SCFCS International Thespian Troupe 7937, received a Superior Rating at the district competition for his solo musical performance of "Extraordinary" from the Broadway musical "Pippin."
Other SCFCS students won an Excellent Rating for their performances. In the large musical group category, Jocelyn Riley was the lead singer in a performance of "Good Morning Baltimore" from "Hairspray" accompanied by Aly Gonzolez, Hailey Newgard, Jenna Durst, Esmeralda Sanchez, Gracey Wilson, Baylee Mallette and Fedjine Constant.
SCFCS students also were recognized with Excellent Ratings in the following categories: Jenna Durst, "Part of Your World" from the "Little Mermaid," and Autumn DeBlock, "Can You Find it In Your Heart?" from "Footloose," solo musical; Megan Bossert, "You're a Good Man Charlie Brown," monologue; and Jacob Owens and AJ Cali, "Confrontation Between Reverend Moore and Ren McCormack" from "Footloose," duet acting.
For the first time this fall, SCFCS chartered an International Thespian Troupe, which held an induction ceremony Oct. 1 in Neel Performing Arts Center at SCF Bradenton. The following students were inducted: Megan Bossert, Isabella Calcorzi, AJ Cali, Max Chernyy, Fedjine Constant, Kaitlyn Davidson, Autumn DeBlock, Jenna Durst, Lissy Frame, Aly Gonzalez, Nina Jones, Hunter Knuckles, Baylee Mallette, Hailey Newgard, Jacob Owens, Diana Pimentel, Jocelyn Riley, Esmeralda Sanchez, Sara Wilkinson and Gracey Wilson.
As an innovative, technology-oriented school, SCFCS is a tuition-free public charter school with grades 6-12 located at SCF Bradenton. Students in 11th grade enroll in the Accelerated College Program to receive guidance and support from SCFCS while taking college courses with an opportunity to earn simultaneously a high school diploma and an associate's degree. A partnership with Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) provides a scholarship program for SCFCS graduates to continue to FGCU for a baccalaureate degree.
