SCF to Host Lecture Series by Buddhist Nun
(Bradenton, Fla., January 28, 2014) — State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) Venice Philosophy Club will host a four-part lecture series, "Me, Myself and I: Buddhist Understanding of the Self and the Path to Tranquility," 2-2:50 p.m. Wednesdays, Feb. 5, 12, 19 and 26, at SCF Venice, 8000 S. Tamiami Trail, building 800, Selby Room. The lectures are free and open to the public.
The series will explore the Buddhist perspective that "self" and "other" are relative terms. Buddhists believe that when people do not understand this principle, they think that their wishes and needs are more important than others' needs and desires. The series will explain how Buddhists learn to be more sympathetic toward others when they recognize themselves in everyone that they meet.
The lecture will be presented by Gen Kelsang Demo, a resident teacher at Kadampa Meditation Center in Sarasota, who has been studying and practicing Buddhism for many years. The Kadampa tradition is an international movement with roots in Tibetan Buddhism.
