SCF Plans Information Sessions on Encore Initiative for Baby Boomers in January

(Bradenton, Fla., Dec. 11, 2014) — State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) will host information sessions about a program to help baby boomers earn a college degree, re-enter the workforce in another field or start a new business. Sessions will be held:

  • 6-7:30 p.m. Jan. 21 at SCF Lakewood Ranch, 7131 Professional Pkwy. E., in the Center for Innovation and Technology, rooms 135-136; and
  • 9:30-11 a.m. Jan. 24 at SCF Venice, 8000 S. Tamiami Trail, Building 800, Room 836.

SCF launched the Manatee-Sarasota Encore initiative as part of the American Association of Community Colleges Plus 50 Encore Completion Program, a national effort to train 10,000 baby boomers for new jobs in health care and education while helping them complete certificates or degrees.

At the information session, participants will learn about how SCF provides a welcoming environment with opportunities for adults age 50 and over. SCF will reintroduce mature learners to the educational environment by helping them choose a new career, learn study strategies and update their technology skills to prepare for college life and begin training in SCF's workforce programs.

A special series of short classes to help mature adults determine what program is right for them will be offered for $57, in recognition of SCF’s 57th anniversary.

The information session will include excerpts from Dr. George Schofield’s presentation “Life After 50: Building Your Future,” recorded by Manatee Educational Television with a special live audience for the Plus 50 Encore Program.

Schofield, a banker turned organizational and developmental psychologist, is the author of a book on the often surprise-laden years after the age of 50, a period that frequently requires additional guidance, creativity and analysis.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that the percentage of adults older than 55 in the workforce will grow to 25 percent in 2020, up from 13 percent in 2000.
