MCIIAA Names Scholarship in Honor of Phill Baker

(Bradenton, Fla., June 4, 2015) — The Manatee County Independent Insurance Agents Association (MCIIAA) has named its scholarship fund at the SCF Foundation in honor of past President Phill Baker and donated $10,000 to endow the scholarship fund, which is now more than $25,000.

MCIIAA surprised Baker with the announcement of the Phill Baker/Manatee County Independent Insurance Agents Association Scholarship at its annual meeting May 12.

“We thank the Manatee County Independent Insurance Agents Association for honoring Phill Baker and his legacy and choosing the SCF Foundation to be a philanthropic partner,” said Cassandra Holmes, executive director of the SCF Foundation.

Baker, vice president of Boyd Insurance & Investment Services Inc., strongly believes in giving back to the community where he lives and works. He was instrumental in creating MCIIAA’s Project InVEST, an insurance education program taught by insurance volunteers at local high schools, and serving as the program’s coordinator for Manatee and Palmetto high schools.

The scholarship expands the mission of the MCIIAA to promote education geared toward insurance in Manatee County, said Baker and Richard Gross, chief operating officer of Boyd Insurance & Investment Services Inc.

“By establishing the Phill Baker/Manatee County Independent Insurance Agents Scholarship Fund, we are not only recognizing what Phill has done for the community but also all those who have been involved with Project InVEST,” Baker and Gross said.

The scholarship is for Manatee County students enrolled full-time in a business- or insurance-related degree program at SCF Bradenton or for current and former SCF students who plan to pursue a baccalaureate degree at a four-year college or university at the time the scholarship is awarded. Students must be enrolled full-time, have a financial need, and maintain a minimum grade-point average of 3.0.

SCF President Dr. Carol F. Probstfeld said the scholarship fund will meet the needs of students who are interested in SCF’s new A.S. Business Administration degree specializing in insurance services.

“The endowed scholarship fund couldn’t have come at a more perfect time. SCF has responded to the needs of the community by creating the new degree specializing in insurance services. We are proud to partner with the Manatee County Independent Insurance Agents Association in preparing the next generation of insurance services professionals,” Probstfeld said.
