SCF Music Theatre Ensemble to Present “The Civil War”

(Bradenton, Fla., Sept. 28, 2015) – The State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) Music Program will present “The Civil War,” a musical with book and lyrics by Gregory Boyd, Jack Boyd  and Frank Wildhorn, and music by Frank Wildhorn, in October in Neel Performing Arts Center at SCF Bradenton, 5840 26th St. W.

Performances are at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, and Saturday, Oct. 24, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25. Tickets are $12 for adults and $6 for students and are available by calling the Neel box office at 941-752-5252.

Featuring a cast of more than 30 members, including SCF and SCF Collegiate School students, the production is directed by Melodie Dickerson, SCF Music Program Director, with a student orchestra conducted by Rex Willis, Director of Guitar and Composition Studies.

The writers drew on letters, diaries, firsthand accounts and the words of Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass and Walt Whitman to create a musical to honor the spirit of the men and women who fought and lived through America’s Civil War. The original Broadway production was nominated for multiple Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

“The Civil War” puts a human face on the greatest tragedy of American history, examining beliefs about freedom, honor and faith. In light of recent national events concerning racial and social perceptions, the themes explored in the musical resonate loudly.

With a brilliant and moving score filled with gospel, country, rock and folk music, the show focuses on the abolition of slavery and the impact of the war on individuals and families on both sides of the conflict. The presentation is especially timely in recognition of the 150th anniversaries of the end of the Civil War and the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.

Attendees also will have the opportunity to be immersed in the time period as they enter the grounds in front of the Neel Performing Arts Center. Civil War re-enactors from the 7th Florida Infantry, Company K will have a small encampment of tents in place and interact with patrons.
