SCF Collegiate School to Welcome German Students at Oct. 2 Breakfast

(Bradenton, FL, Sept. 29, 2015) — The State College of Florida Collegiate School (SCFCS) will welcome area students from the Manatee German American Partnership Program (GAPP) at 8 a.m. Friday, Oct. 2, in the cafeteria at the public charter school on the campus of State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF), 5840 26th St. W., Bradenton.

“We are very excited to host the students who have travelled from Germany to share in the GAPP experience with their counterparts from SCFCS and other local schools,” said Holly Cole, an SCFCS instructor. “The program provides such a wonderful opportunity for students from both countries to experience another cultures firsthand.”

GAPP was established in the 1980s by President Ronald Regan to promote educational and cultural exchanges and is recognized by both American and German governments. SCFCS will play host to 11 of the 26 German students, with area schools including Southeast, Lakewood Ranch, Palmetto and Braden River high schools sponsoring the remaining 15.

The German teens will attend classes at their hosts’ schools and experience local attractions including area beaches, Ringling College of Art and Design and the Ringling Museum of Art. The group also will take a weekend trip to Orlando.

Next June, the American students, including 11 from SCFCS, will fly to Germany to stay with their exchange partners in Gelsenkirchen for three weeks to attend school at Max Planck Gymnasium. The local students will visit the seat of the European Parliament in Brussels and meet with local officials, as well as tour Cologne and Dusseldorf.

According to German GAPP Coordinator Conny Klaesener, many students refer to the time spent in the program as “the best in their lives.

“The program allows students to learn more about another country, its language and culture,” said Klaesener. “For the GAPP students, it is more than just a one-time visit to Europe or to the U.S.; the GAPP partners often become lifelong friends."
