SCF Lakewood Ranch to Host BioTech Expo

(Bradenton, Fla., Oct. 21, 2015) – BioTech Expo, a networking event for the regional life sciences community, is scheduled for 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12 at the Lakewood Ranch campus of State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF), 7131 Professional Pkwy. E., Sarasota. The free event is sponsored by the Sarasota-Bradenton chapter of BioFlorida, Florida’s trade group for biotechnology.

The purpose of the BioTech Expo is to highlight the strong STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) infrastructure being offered by SCF and other colleges, universities and institutes in the Sarasota/Bradenton area. The event will highlight the innovation, research and health care being pursued in the life sciences.

“SCF students and faculty had important roles in the creation of the local BioFlorida chapter, and have been active members for the past four years,” said Dr. Matthew Thomas, SCF associate professor of Natural Sciences. “The Expo is a chance for all the academic institutions in the area to demonstrate the skills and commitment our students have for growing life sciences in the area. Plus, it demonstrates to the local life science industry how committed we are in helping them be successful in their goals.”

The Expo will place special emphasis on the manner in which the arts are becoming influential in discovery and innovation. Programs that have incorporated the arts into their STEM curricula (STEAM) will be highlighted. A brief program will be followed by introductions to industry leaders and university heads. Academic posters will be on display and light appetizers and sodas will be served, with a cash bar for wine and beer.

Last year, approximately 40 SCF students took part in the first Expo when it was held at New College. Thomas is hoping that even more SCF students – as well as students from other schools, interns and representatives from life sciences companies, start-ups and research programs – attend this year’s Expo. Organizers plan to make it an annual event.
