Diabetes Walk Slated for Nov. 14 at SCF Bradenton

(Bradenton, Fla., Nov. 6, 2015) — State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) will sponsor its second American Diabetes Community Walk/Run at 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, at SCF Bradenton, 5840 26th St. W. Participants can choose between a 5K run or one-mile walk around campus. The event is open to the public and dog-friendly for those on leashes.

There are nearly 26 million Americans living with diabetes and 79 million with pre-diabetes. If present trends continue, one in three Americans will have diabetes by 2050. The Community Walk will raise funds for type 1 and type 2 diabetes research and education programs.

There is no registration fee for the Community Walk, but a donation of $5 per participant is suggested. Check-in begins 8 a.m. at Building 14. The Walk starts at the SCF Collegiate School (Building 19) at 9 a.m., following an opening ceremony at the performance pavilion that will include a greeting by Dr. Mike Mears, SCF vice president of strategic initiatives, and warm-up lead by representatives from New Balance.

Go to to register, make a donation or volunteer. The first 50 people to check in receive a free event T-shirt. Participants also can register on the day of the Walk beginning at 8 a.m. Friends, colleagues, families and other groups are invited to sign up as a team.

"We are looking to Community Walks as a way to engage new volunteers and donors in the Stop Diabetes movement in smaller communities around the country,” said David McShea, national director, Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes.

“Due to the challenging economy of the past few years, we had a number of smaller Step Out events cancelled since 2009, but the Community Walks will raise funds and awareness of diabetes at a low cost, meaning more funds will go toward helping us to stop diabetes," added McShea.

SCF is participating in the Diabetes Walk as part of its ongoing Pride in Wellness initiative. Sponsors include New Balance, White Picket Produce and Manatee Apparel Graphics. For more information, contact Jennifer LaHurd, SCF director of human resources, at 941-752-5599.
