SCF to Host Award-winning Author John Gery

(Bradenton, Fla., Feb. 10, 2015) – State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) will host author John Gery, who will give a poetry reading from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, in the Fine Art Gallery at SCF Bradenton, 5840 26th St. W. The event is free and open to the public.

Gery is an award-winning author who has published six volumes of poetry, along with critical essays on a wide range of poets, and whose work has been translated into seven languages. He is a research professor of English at the University of New Orleans and the founding director of the Ezra Pound Center for Literature at Brunnenburg Castle in Northern Italy, where Pound lived and worked.

Among his accolades are the Plumbers Ink Poetry Award, a National Endowment for the Arts Creative Writing Fellowship, a Fulbright Fellowship, a Research Fellowship from the University of Minnesota, and multiple artist fellowships from the Louisiana Division of the Arts and Bucknell University. One of his works, “The Enemies of Leisure,” was named a Best Book of 1995 by Publishers Weekly and won a Critic’s Choice Award from the San Francisco Review of Books.

Gery’s visit is sponsored by the SCF Department of Language and Literature, which is using his new collection, “Have at You Now!” as a text in its Written Communication II class this semester.
