SCF Collegiate School Students Going to State Odyssey of the Mind Tournament

(Bradenton, Fla., Feb. 25, 2015) – Sixth-grade students at the State College of Florida Collegiate School are going to the state Odyssey of the Mind tournament April 11 after placing fourth in their division competition Feb. 14 in Dover, Fla.

The team is made up of Robyn Bell, Prudny Bonnaire-Fils, Devin Grundy, Zach Hovatter, Maximilien Monod, Angel Morales-Alvardo and Raleigh Waldin, and is coached by SCFCS science instructor Kirsten Boyer.

The problem they solved, titled “Lose Your Marbles,” required them to design, build and test a structure, made only of balsa wood and glue, that balanced and supported as much weight as possible. The structure held five marbles that were released during weight placement, with a piece of the structure going with each marble.

The team developed the structure, the concept skit and all props independently of adult help, as stated in Odyssey of the Mind rules.

The state tournament will be held at the University of Central Florida in Orlando.
