SCF Venice to Mark Earth Day with Special Events

(Bradenton, Fla., April 9, 2015) – State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) will recognize Earth Day on Wednesday, April 22, with special events at SCF Venice at 8000 S. Tamiami Trail.

Sweet Bay Nursery in Parrish will have a native plant display and sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. outside Building 800. Sweet Bay, 10824 Erie Road in Parrish, has been specializing in native plants for the past 15 years in Manatee County.

Glen Bupp of Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales will give a public presentation -- “The Birds and the Bees … and the Balms? Intimate Interactions Between Florida’s Scrub Mints and Their Pollinators” -- from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. in Building 800, Selby Room. Bupp is the rare plant curator at Bok Tower Gardens and maintains its seed bank and living collection of endangered plants from north and central Florida.

Scrub mint is a small, fragrant, low-growing shrub native to central peninsular Florida. Native plants such as scrub mint provide much better support for pollinators than exotic plants, and Sweet Bay will have some scrub mints available.

The Earth Day events at SCF Venice are sponsored by the Venice Green Team and the Philosophical and Environmental Trekkers, formerly known as the Philosophy Club. The Earth Day events will be the club’s first activities with its new mission, which is to provide students who are interested in philosophy and environmental issues with a forum for discussion. Students explore the meaning of life, matters of ethical importance, and cultural diversity, including world religious views. The environmental focus of the club includes environmental philosophy, science and activism.

Woody McCree, associate professor, art, design, humanities, is the Green Team chair. The SCF Green Team is a group of students, faculty and staff who work in collaboration to design and implement projects that maintain the natural beauty and the environmental significance of SCF Venice.
