SCF Board Approves New Degrees, Specializations and Certificates

(Bradenton, Fla., April 21, 2015) — State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) District Board of Trustees approved new degrees, specializations and certificates slated to begin in Fall 2015 at the April 21 board meeting.

Developed in partnership with local businesses, the new programs and certificates are designed to meet the needs of the local workforce and prepare students for relevant careers including the following:

  • Associate in Science (A.S.) in Network Systems Technology with a specialization in cyber security;
  • A.S. in Business Administration with a specialization in insurance services;
  • A.S. in Health Services Administration;
  • A.S. in Technology Project Management; and
  • Certificates including Database Administrator Certificate, Web Development Specialist Certificate, Entrepreneurship Certificate and Live Event Media Production Certificate.

Other board activity includes the following:

  • The board approved a grant proposal for Student Support Services, a TRIO Program funded by the U.S. Department of Education, to provide students with opportunities for academic development and assist them with basic college requirements, and motivate them toward the successful completion of their postsecondary education. If funded, SCF would receive nearly $220,000 for five years to provide additional intensive services to a cohort of 160 SCF students who are first-generation in college, low-income or students with disabilities.
  • The board gave approval to repair a 50-year-old orchestra stage lift in Neel Performing Arts Center.
  • The board approved the non-financial and financial consent agenda items.

Dr. Mike Mears, vice president of strategic initiatives, also gave an update on the Strategic Plan process, and Josef Rill gave an update on the food services contract and renovations to the food serveries at SCF Bradenton and Venice.

The next board meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. May 19 at SCF Lakewood Ranch.
