SCF Receives Grant to Create Nursing Scholarship

(Bradenton, Fla., Feb. 4, 2016) — The State College of Florida (SCF) Foundation was awarded a $5,000 grant from the Venice Hospital Auxiliary Volunteers. This grant will be used to create the SCF South Sarasota County Outstanding Nursing Scholarship.

“This scholarship is to award outstanding achievement to one nursing student and will be based upon high academic accomplishments and SCF Nursing Faculty recommendations,” said SCF Foundation Executive Director Cassandra Holmes. To qualify for consideration of this scholarship, an applicant must be a resident of Florida for tuition purposes, be considered a full-time enrolled student with a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average each semester, and be accepted or enrolled in the associate’s or bachelor’s nursing degree program at SCF. Student must reside in the Venice Regional Bayfront Health Service area (South Sarasota County). The student also must attend the SCF Scholarship Luncheon and Hospital Volunteers of Venice (HVOV) Fall Breakfast. 

The 2015-2016 members of the Board of Directors for HVOV are Jane Decastro, Vice President Patient Services; John Rigali, Vice President Education and Jim Shook, Treasurer. The 2016 executive committee members are Dick Fenstermaker, President; Ken Harrison, President Elect; Sheila Mallinger, VP Education/Communications; Dean Laux, VP Ancillary Services; Carol LaFata, VP Off-Site Facilities; Jan D'Ambrosio, VP Patient Services; Dana Pratt, Treasurer; Diana Miracle, Secretary and Parlimentarian Shirley Case.

SCF continues its long tradition of academic excellence in the nursing program with recent Associate in Science in Nursing graduates achieving a 100 percent pass rate on the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX). As a gold-level member of the Florida Healthcare Simulation Alliance (FHSA), SCF also regularly hosts conferences and continuing education courses for health care professionals statewide at the Medical Technology and Simulation Center (MTSC) at SCF Lakewood Ranch, a regional training center for FHSA.
