Manatee Healthcare System Awards SCF Nursing Student $5,000 Scholarship

(Bradenton, Fla., May 11, 2016) — For the first time during a pinning ceremony for graduating nurses at State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF), Manatee Healthcare System presented a $5,000 scholarship for excellence in nursing to a top nursing student, Friday, May 6, at SCF’s Neel Performing Arts Center.

Vernon DeSear, vice president of Manatee Healthcare System, presented the Excellence in Nursing Scholarship to Lindsey Gustafson, a nursing student who exemplifies compassion, maturity and the skills to be a leader.

DeSear said Manatee Healthcare System is proud of its partnership with SCF and the SCF Foundation. The healthcare corporation has provided student internships, scholarships and program funding. This year, The Manatee Memorial Hospital Excellence in Nursing Scholarship was founded to recognize the accomplishments of “The Best SCF Nursing Student” residing in Manatee County.

Gustafson not only excels academically, DeSear said, she also volunteers to help children with disabilities at Sarasota Manatee Association for Riding Therapy (SMART) and she volunteers at the Humane Society of Manatee County. Her volunteer work, her leadership and her academic success led to the scholarship award.

“Her professors say she is bright and dedicated to succeed. She is a strong team player and eager to learn,” DeSear told the crowd at the nurses pinning ceremony on Friday, May 6, at SCF’s Neel Performing Arts Center.

DeSear noted Gustafson’s “seemingly endless determination to succeed in whatever she chooses.”

“Her goals are set high and I have no doubt that she will achieve them and become an exemplary nurse with a great deal of compassion,” DeSear said.
