Brain Bowl Team Captain Named FCSAA Student of the Month

(Bradenton, Fla., May 26, 2016) — Michael Freedman, the Brain Bowl captain for State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota’s (SCF’s) Team Phoenix, has been named the May student of the month by the Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA).

Freedman was recognized for leading the team to a first place finish in the FCSAA State Brain Bowl competition and for his exceptional individual performance, regularly placing in the top ten at competitions. He won the Dave Ehlert High Point Award at State. He also placed first individually at Regionals, third at Sectionals, eighth at Erik Korray Open, and first at the SCF Invitational. He is the third leading scorer in SCF history with just under 4000 points overall.

He impressed his Brain Bowl coaches by going above and beyond for the team. Not only did he have near perfect attendance at practices, he attended additional and more advanced practices at New College every week in order to gain an edge.

“He is the kind of student that makes being a coach easy – you set the bar high, and he sets it even higher for the rest of the students,” said Christina Dwyer, SCF Brain Bowl coach. “His leadership has truly allowed the program to flourish."

As student of the month, Freedman’s photo and profile are posted on the FCSAA website. To see his profile, visit thefcsaa.com/default-content/bbsotmmayfreedman. For more information, email Dwyer at dwyerc@scf.edu.
