SCF, Manatee-Sarasota Libraries Celebrate National Book Lovers Day

(Bradenton, Fla., Aug. 4, 2016) — The librarians at State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) know how to support and cultivate book lovers. Just ask Helene Little, an SCF student, who spends a lot of time in the library.

“Most of my down time is spent with a book in my hand and having leisure material so close at hand while on campus is so convenient,” Little says. “Through different suggestions from staff I discovered many new authors that I was unaware of, some of whom are now at the top of my reading list."

Little said studying at the library allowed her to “just grab a book off the shelf and switch gears for a while before I felt ready to dive back into the subject I was studying at the time."

Aug. 9 is National Book Lovers Day and book lovers at SCF have easy access to publications through the College’s “Overdrive” app that allows them to check out ebooks and audiobooks on their phones or tablets. In addition, the “Flipster” app gives students, faculty and staff access to many digital magazines.

SCF’s librarians know how to cultivate book lovers and can help library users find something they love. They get users to read many different authors and book genres through a variety of programs and challenges. This year, they launched a reading challenge dubbed #16in16 that prompts readers to try a variety of genres. The #16in16 challenge gets readers to read 16 different types of books in 2016 including a book published in 2016, a National Book Award winner, a memoir or autobiography, a nonfiction book and a young adult book. Participants can post their progress on social media with hashtags #16in16 and #SCFLibraries or #ResolvetoRead.

Based on recommendations she got at the library, Little is now a fan of Florida author Tim Dorsey and also enjoys books by Elin Hildebrand. The lighter fare allows her some down time from her studies.

The libraries at all three SCF locations also offer “student choice” collections, which include books, magazines and DVDs with documentaries and classic and contemporary film.
