SCF, Manatee-Sarasota Fine Art Gallery to Participate in Museum Assessment Program

(Bradenton, Fla., Aug. 11, 2016) — The American Alliance of Museums has accepted the State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) Fine Art Gallery in the Museum Assessment Program to undertake a Collections Stewardship Assessment during the 2016-17 academic year.

The Museum Assessment Program (MAP) is provided on behalf of the American Alliance of Museums (AAM) and Institute of Museum and Library Services. Since its inception in 1981, MAP has helped more than 4,600 small and mid-sized museums strengthen operations, plan for the future and meet standards. Through a process of self-assessment, institutional activities and peer review, museums emerge with:

  • a greater alignment of activities, mission and resources;
  • an analysis of its strengths, weaknesses and opportunities;
  • a prioritized roadmap for improving operations and meeting standards;
  • its practices benchmarked to standards;
  • enhanced credibility with potential funders and donors;
  • improved communication between staff, board and other constituents;
  • expert advice, recommendations and resources;
  • increased capacity for strategic planning.

In 2012, SCF completed an AAM Organizational Assessment. The Collections Stewardship Assessment will be another step toward SCF’s vision of the Fine Art Gallery becoming a museum accredited through the AAM.

The team chosen to carry out the Collections Stewardship Assessment includes:

  • Jamie Tracy; Department Chair, Art, Design, Humanities
  • Joe Loccisano; Gallery Manager, Art Design, Humanities
  • Barry Puett; Director of Homeland Security and Public Safety Administration BAS Degree, Professor
  • Altay Ozgener; Professor, Mathematics
  • Katherine Bzura; Instructor, Art, Design, Humanities
  • Dory McQueen; Grants Coordinator, Resource Development
  • Robert McDonnel; community volunteer and former archivist

The self-assessment is already underway and is due to the AAM by Dec. 15. Afterward an AAM reviewer must complete a site visit by July 15, 2017 and draft a report on what SCF should include in its future museum practices. This is a step toward having the museum accredited through the AAM.
