SCF, Manatee-Sarasota Music Theatre Ensemble to Present “Grease”

(Bradenton, Fla., Sept. 27, 2016) — The Music Theatre Ensemble at State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) will present the musical “Grease” Oct. 21-23 in SCF’s Neel Performing Arts Center, , 5840 26th St. W. Show times are 8 p.m. Oct. 21-22 and 2 p.m. Oct. 23.

The 1950s high school dream is about to explode in this rollicking musical that is both an homage to the idealism of the decade and a satire of high schoolers’ age-old desire to be rebellious. At the heart of the story is the romance between hot-rodding gangster Danny Zuko and the sweet new girl in town, Sandy Dumbrowski. They had a secret romance in the summer but their return to school makes the affair a bit more complicated. The whole gang sings and dances around Danny and Sandy’s romance, through such hit songs as "Greased Lightnin,” “We Go Together,” and “Mooning,” recalling the music of Buddy Holly, Little Richard and Elvis Presley that became the soundtrack of a generation.

More than 40 student performers and technical crew members join with the student orchestra under the direction of Rex Willis, director of guitar ensemble, in three performances directed by Melodie Dickerson, music program director, and choreographed by Kelly Burnette, dance instructor. Language and Literature professor Anastasia Bojanowski will appear as the principal of Rydell High School.

General admission is $12; students and SCF employees, $6. SCF’s Neel Performing Arts Center box office hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday; and one hour before each scheduled performance.
