SCF, Manatee-Sarasota Collecting Pet Food to be delivered to Seniors with Pets

(Bradenton, Fla., Oct. 27, 2016) — State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) is collecting dog and cat food for pets of seniors in need. The pet food, collected at SCF Lakewood Ranch, is distributed to seniors for their pets through Meals on Wheels.

Organizers at SCF Lakewood Ranch have collected more than 750 pounds of dog and cat food since January. The College began collecting the pet food after learning that many seniors were saving part of their Meals on Wheels deliveries for their pets because they couldn’t afford pet food. Pets offer seniors several benefits including companionship that can help alleviate or prevent depression, reducing blood pressure and increasing physical activity.

Too often, struggling seniors have to choose between caring for their pets and caring for themselves. In addition to Meals on Wheels, the Food Bank offers 10 emergency food deliveries a week. Cindy Sloan, vice president of the Food Bank, has helped facilitate the food drive.

The pet food collection is ongoing at SCF Lakewood Ranch. Students, faculty and staff all contribute to the drive. Cindy Sloan, vice president of the Food Bank, has helped facilitate the food drive. The collection box is in the lobby of Building 1 at SCF Lakewood Ranch. Anyone can contribute.
