SCF, Manatee-Sarasota Brain Bowl Team Headed to State Tournament

(Bradenton, Fla., Feb. 16, 2017) — The State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) Brain Bowl team Firebird recently took first place in the Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA) regional tournament against Valencia College and South Florida State College. The win qualified the team for the state tournament March 30 in Panama City.

Team Firebird, made up of David Espinal (captain), Lacey Anderson, Nathanael Havlik and Damien Bobrek, a State College of Florida Collegiate School student, is the third SCF Brain Bowl team to take first place at the regional tournament. But for the first time this year, two of the team members – Espinal and Bobreck – took first and second respectively for individual points scored.

Before the team heads to the state tournament, they are preparing for a national tournament Feb. 24-25 in Minnesota. The team had the most competitive Sectional tournament, not affiliated with the FCSAA, in the country with four of the top 10 Brain Bowl teams competing at SCF Bradenton. Phil Travis, an SCF history professor, and Christina Dwyer, an SCF mathematics professor, are the team’s coaches.

At the Sectional tournament in January, team Firebird placed fourth after two Valencia teams and a Broward College team, but when the teams were ranked nationally based on performance, all four teams were ranked equally, 6th in the country.  Those teams then qualified for a spot in the national tournament.
