SCF Librarian to Chair Selection Committee for Youth Media Award

(Bradenton, Fla., April 25, 2017) — A librarian with StateCollege of  Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) has been appointed to chair the Pura Belpré Award (PBA) selection committee. The PBA is an American Library Association (ALA) award for youth media.

As chair, Alicia K. Long has the opportunity to work in education and library science to research and promote multicultural literature. Long, a 2009 Spectrum Scholar and 2012 American Library Association (ALA) Emerging Leader, is the reference and instruction librarian at SCF. She earned her Master of Library and Information Science from the University of South Florida in 2011.

“I feel thrilled and honored to have the chance to work in a profession with values such as access for all, intellectual freedom, diversity, equity, and inclusion,” Long said.  “I look forward to going to work every day.”

The PBA is an ALA Youth Media Award. It is co-sponsored by REFORMA, the National Association to Promote Library & Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish-speaking, and the Association for Library Services to Children. The Pura Belpré Award selection committee presents two medals each year to an author and to an illustrator of a book for children that “affirms, portrays and celebrates” the Latino culture. It recognizes creators of Latino origin who create books about the experiences of people of Latin origin in the United States.
