CROP Program at SCF Brings Home Business & Education Partnership Award

(Bradenton, Fla., Sept. 22, 2017) — The College Reach-Out Program (CROP) at State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) won the “Good Things Come in Big Packages, Too” Business & Education Partnership Award on Friday for its work with middle and high school students. This was the 27th year the Manatee Chamber of Commerce and the School District of Manatee County has recognized businesses, organizations and individuals who have made a commitment to enhance education in Manatee County.

“This award recognizes the dedicated educators who work with the College Reach-Out Program to ensure all students in our community have opportunities for higher education,” said Kristen L. Anderson, program director of special programs at SCF. “It is with them in mind, that I accept this award.”

The CROP program was nominated for awards in three additional categories: “Rookie of the Year,” “Partners Together,” for collaboration with partners on a program and “It’s a Two-Way Street” for its partnership with Bayshore High School.

CROP is designed to help motivate students to pursue a college education, develop their basic learning skills, strengthen students’ and parents’ understanding of the benefits of postsecondary education and foster academic, personal, and career development. SCF works with middle and high schools in Manatee and Sarasota counties to identify students for the program and to work with them through their transition to college.

The primary objective of CROP is to increase the number of low-income educationally disadvantaged students in middle and high school who are admitted to college and successfully complete postsecondary education.  Participants are students who otherwise would be unlikely to seek admission to a community college, state university, or independent institution without special support and recruitment efforts.

SCF’s Presidential Jazz Quartet entertained the crowd at the Business & Education Partnership Awards Breakfast Friday before the winners were announced.
