Volleyball Tournament Showcases State’s Top Teams

(Bradenton, Fla., Nov. 2, 2017) — Eight college volleyball teams are competing this weekend as the State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) and The Bradenton Area Sports Commission host the Region 8 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) volleyball tournament at the Bradenton Area Convention Center, 1 Haben Blvd., Palmetto. This year’s tournament winner will go on to compete at the national tournament Nov. 16-18 in Hutchinson, Kansas.

The competition includes returning 2016 state volleyball champions Miami Dade College, along with College of Central Florida, Polk State College, Florida State College at Jacksonville, Santa Fe College, Palm Beach State College, St. Petersburg College and the 2015 champions, Hillsborough Community College.

Lynden Blake, weekend anchor and sports reporter for Sarasota News Network (SNN), will serve as emcee for the kick-off banquet Thursday evening. Blake is an Auburn University graduate and as an aspiring sportscaster she has worked in many media outlets. She was a three-sport athlete, playing softball and basketball and cheering for Benjamin Russell High School.

The event will kick off with a banquet at the convention center Thursday night. Play begins at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 3. The championship game will be played at 2 p.m. Nov. 5. The tournament is open to the public and admission is $10 per day or a tournament pass can be purchased for $25 at the gate.
