MCC Hosts Statewide Mathematics Conference
(Bradenton, Fla., Jan. 24, 2005) - Manatee Community College (MCC) will host the 38th joint statewide conference of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) and the Florida Two-Year College Mathematics Association (FTYCMA) Feb. 25 and 26, at the Center for Innovation and Technology at MCC Lakewood Ranch, 7131 Professional Pkwy. East, Sarasota. Keynote speakers are Dr. David Bressoud, Dr. J. Brian Conrey, Dr. John Kenelly and James Lang.
Professor Bressoud, with Macalester College, Minn., has authored four books, serves as associate or co-editor of four mathematical publications and has published numerous articles. Conrey is the founding executive director of the American Institute of Mathematics and a professor at Oklahoma State University. Kenelly played an important role in developing the department of mathematical science at Clemson University, S.C. After retiring, he devoted time to numerous organizations and was president of the International Mathematical Olympiad 2001 USA. Lang has taught mathematics and statistics for the last 27 years at Valencia Community College. He has a bachelor's degree in physics and master's degree in mathematics from Georgia Tech and a master's in statistics from the University of Illinois.
In less than 100 years, the MAA has grown to 27,000 members nationwide. The FTYCMA has representation on state and national committees. Dr. Michael Mears, dean of the division of mathematics, natural science, technology, business and wellness at MCC, is a past president of MAA and FTYCMA.
