MCC Clubs Excel in Statewide Competition
(Bradenton, Fla., April 12, 2005) - Manatee Community College (MCC) Math Olympics and Phi Beta Lambda clubs excelled in recent statewide competitions. The MCC Venice Math Olympics team won first place in the small college division and the MCC Bradenton team won second place in overall competition. Members of the MCC Venice Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) business team won three awards.
Math Olympics competition was held April 2 at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville. MCC Venice team members are Jeanine Hargis-Sorke, Clint Rickner, Toni Allen and Mary Ellen Koran. MCC Bradenton team members are Kevin Clifford, Sovandy Hang, Jessica Pfeilsticker and Shawn Wilder. Team coaches are professors Mary Beth Headlee, MCC Venice, and Altay Ozgener, MCC Bradenton.
A total of 275 students form 18 Florida community colleges and universities competed in PBL state conference competition held March 30 through April 2 in Orlando. MCC winners are:
- Sovanna Sok, Heather MacDonald and Dawn Smith, first-place, business decision making;
- Sovanna Sok, third place, public speaking; and
- Heather MacDonald, third place, business communications.
