MCC Honors Students Recognized

(Bradenton, Fla., May 3, 2005) - Members of the Manatee Community College (MCC) Spring 2005 graduating class and other students who excelled scholastically or through service to their college and community were recognized in Honors Convocation ceremonies held April 29, at MCC Bradenton and MCC Venice. Students were awarded a total of $124,750 collegewide.

Winners of more than one award at the MCC Bradenton Convocation are:

  • Jasper Adams, Beverly Beall and R. Kemp Riechmann Foundation award of $5,000; and Joe Fant Memorial Award for Outstanding Achievement of $1,500 from the Kiwanis Club of Bradenton;
  • Lindsey Schuster, Frank H. Spain University of South Florida (USF) transfer scholarship of $1,500 that is renewable for up to four semesters; and Kiwanis Club of Bradenton award of $2,500 for each of two years;
  • Michele Jurgensen, Beall and Reichmann Foundation award of $5,000; and Kiwanis Club award of $2,500 for each of two years;
  • Turquoise Dillard, USF transfer scholarship of $1,500 that is renewable for up to four semesters; and Beall and Riechmann Foundation award of $4,000;
  • Mischa Draime, Kiwanis Club award of $2,500 for each of two years; and Beall and Riechmann Foundation award of $2,000;
  • Jessica Pfeilsticker, Kiwanis Club award of $2,500 for each of two years; and the club's  Dr. Samuel R. Neel Jr. Award for Courage and Perseverance of $1,000; and
  • Trang Nguyen, Beall and Riechmann Foundation award of $3,000; and American Association of University Women (AAUW) award of $1,000.

Other award-winners at MCC Bradenton include:

  • Dwight Gibson, Diana Jackson and Melissa King, Kiwanis Club awards of $2,500 per year for two years;
  • Nick Brown, Tomas Carrillo, Alena Clark, Yoshina Cumberbatch, Thoa Dao, Heather Kass, Tabitha Sadler, Jason Taylor and Jose Rafael Vargas, Beall and Riechmann Foundation awards ranging from $2,000 to $5,000;
  • Matthew Fournier, Stephen J. Korcheck Academic Achievement Award of $1,000 from the Kiwanis Club.

            Winners of other major awards at the MCC Venice Convocation are:

  • Jennifer Hanchey,  USF transfer scholarship award of $1,500 renewable for up to four semesters;
  • Nisha Cleamey, Beall and Riechmann Foundation award of $2,000 scholarship;
  • Ramona Mayer, Women's Contemporary Artists Award of $500; and Rotary Club of North Port award of $400;
  • Tara Spielman, Outstanding Future Educator award of $500;
  • Holli Baty, Amy Coyle, Bessie Durie and Rochelle Powell, Rotary Club of North Port awards of $400; and
  • Laura Dresser, Peter & Mary Lou Vogt for Excellence in Studio Art award of $300 and an exhibit of her work in the MCC Venice Fine Art Gallery. 

      Presented on an annual basis at both MCC campuses, Image Award medallions recognize students who have overcome barriers to succeed in achieving their goals. MCC Bradenton students who won the awards are Ruben Ferrer, Jean Morey, Joshua Nwankwo and Anthony Wright Jr. MCC Venice winners are Nancy Adrian and Michael Heilman.
