MCC Expands Offerings for Those Learning the English Language
(Bradenton, Fla., June 6, 2005) -Manatee Community College (MCC) students who need help with reading and writing English will enjoy a wider range of classes offered at MCC Bradenton and, for the first time, may take the classes at MCC Venice in Fall term 2005.
The college will offer new English for Academic Purposes (EAP) classes days or evenings at MCC Bradenton, 5840 26th St. West. New daytime classes will be offered at MCC Venice, 8000 S. Tamiami Trail. The classes are for English language learners at intermediate and high intermediate levels of skill.
Students in either EAP Intermediate Reading Level I or II take three hours of classroom instruction each week. The level I class is designed to develop the ability to read text on basic academic topics with an emphasis on vocabulary expansion and application of critical reading skills. The level II class focuses on contemporary and literary topics with an emphasis on enhancing critical reading skills. EAP Intermediate Writing Level I and II each require three hours of classroom instruction and two hours of laboratory instruction each week. The level I class focuses on grammar and developing competency in sentence building and paragraph writing. The emphasis in the level II class is on making the transition to the mainstream academic environment.
