Governor Appoints New MCC Trustees
(Bradenton, Fla., July 20, 2005) - Gov. Jeb Bush announced the appointments of two new members of the Manatee Community College District Board of Trustees for terms that began July 18, 2005. New appointees are long-time Venice resident Steve Harner and former U.S. Rep. Dan Miller of Bradenton. Appointments are subject to confirmation by the Florida Senate.
Harner, along with wife Janis Payne, owns and operates the Crow's Nest Marina Restaurant and Bogey's Restaurant & Sports Pub. Both restaurants participate in numerous charitable fund-raising events. An Annual Crow's Nest Regatta sailing event has raised more than $85,000 for Venice area organizations. In 2003, Harner helped found the Venice Sports Hall of Fame to raise funds for the Rotary Futures Program at Venice High School.
An active civil servant, Harner serves on The Foundation for Manatee Community College board and was its president from 2002 to 2004. He is on the Financial Task Force for the renovation of the Venice Community Center and has served as president of the board of directors. In 2004, he was South County United Way campaign chair. He is a founding board member and former chair of The Venice Foundation. He also has served as a board member, coach, umpire and referee for a number of youth sports. Other honors include Venice-Nokomis Rotary Paul Harris Fellow, South Venice Rotary Distinguished Community Service and City of Venice Pillar of the Community awards. In 1998, Harner was named a Community Champion by the Venice Gondolier. In 2003, he was inducted into the Sarasota County Video Archives Hall of Fame.
Miller, U.S. representative from the 13th District, left the U.S. Congress in 2002 in keeping with a self-imposed term limit of 10 years. A successful business entrepreneur and teacher, he was a resident fellow at Harvard University in 2003. He currently teaches public policy at the University of South Florida (USF).
Earlier in his career, Miller taught statistics at graduate and undergraduate levels at Louisiana State University (LSU), Georgia State University and USF. A graduate of Manatee High School, he has a bachelor's degree from the University of Florida, an M.B.A. from Emory University (Atlanta, Ga.) and a Ph.D. in marketing and statistics from LSU. Miller also took classes at MCC in 1961 and 1962 and was the college's guest speaker at Spring 2002 commencement ceremonies. He served as a trustee for Manatee Memorial Hospital for four years.
Replacing former board member Tramm Hudson (Sarasota),
Harner will complete a term that ends May 31, 2007. Miller
succeeds Ed Vogler II of Bradenton and his term ends May 31,
2009. Gov. Bush also reappointed current board members Beverly
Beall, Bradenton, and Jennifer Saslaw, Sarasota, to terms
ending May 31, 2009.
