Winners of MCC Magazine's Art Competition Announced
(Bradenton, Fla., Dec. 14, 2005) - Winners of the Manatee Community College (MCC) Pentangle magazine art competition have been announced. Their works are eligible to appear in the award-winning humanities magazine, which will be published in the spring. First-place winners receive cash awards.
Pentangle entries may be viewed 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, through Jan. 12 in the Art Building, number 10, at MCC Bradenton, 5840 26th St. West. The gallery will be closed for Winter Break Dec. 17 through Jan. 1.
Winners are Trisha Evans, three-dimensional; Liz Ford-Coates, two-dimensional; Britt VanderSchouw, graphic design; and Mark Rush, photography. Others who received honorable mentions are Kathleen Weiss, Carey Borden, Shannon Phillips; Keegan McDuffie and Andrew Sheele.
New College Professor Barry Freedland, who recently exhibited his found-art sculpture in the MCC Fine Art Gallery, judged the competition. Freedland's work has been shown in numerous galleries that include the Boston Center for the Arts, Museum of Fine Arts (Boston), Santa Fe Institute of Contemporary Art (Calif.) and Art Center (Sarasota). He is the recipient of grants and fellowships from the Massachusetts Cultural Council and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston). Freedland also taught at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tenn., and Bridgewater State College, Mass.
