Shell Art & Sailor's Valentines Exhibited at MCC Venice
(Venice, Fla., Jan. 5, 2006) - An exhibit of Shell Art and Sailor's Valentines by award-winning artist Linda Rawson will continue through Feb. 6 at the Manatee Community College (MCC) Venice Fine Art Gallery, 8000 S. Tamiami Trail. The reception is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
Rawson, a Certified Picture Framer, and her husband, Tom, own and operate The Frame Shop in Venice. After making customized frames for shell mosaics called sailor's valentines, she became interested in shell art and went on to win awards in that medium. A sailor's valentine is a type of shell art that originated in the 1800s when sailors commissioned artisans to create sentimental love messages using beautiful tiny seashells. Rawson and partner Linda Thompson teach shell art classes, including one devoted to making a shell-covered Christmas tree. Rawson's other interests are digital photography, print-making and fabric arts.
Regular gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday. For more information, call (941) 408-1476.
