Winners of MCC Magazine's Poetry and Fiction Contests Announced
(Bradenton, Fla., Feb. 22, 2006) - Winners of Manatee Community College (MCC) Pentangle magazine poetry and fiction contests have been announced.
In the poetry category, winners are Stephanie Knox, first place; Sharon Thomas, second place; Jeff McDaniel, third place; and Ardith Heemskerk, honorable mention. Cuban-born poet, novelist and essayist Pablo Medina judged the competition. His works include the novels, The Return of Felix Nogara and The Marks of Birth, and he has published two poetry collections and an essay collection. His work also has appeared in American Poetry Review, Iguana Dreams and other magazines.
Winners in the fiction category are Matt Murphy, first place; Camille Heistand, second place; Jacob Durrance, third place; and Stephen Jaquith and Mike Landy, honorable mentions. The competition was judged by Venice resident Rich McKee, an author and professor who teaches at Ringling School of Art and Design. His book of essays, The Clan of the Flapdragon and Other Adventures in Etymology, by B.M.W. Schrapnel, Ph.D., was published by the University of Alabama Press. The satiric essays first appeared in the Oasis literary magazine.
