MCC Dean Receives Distinguished Service Award
(Bradenton, Fla., March 16, 2006) -- Dr. Mike Mears, dean of instruction for Manatee Community College's (MCC) division of mathematics, science, technology and business, received the 2006 Distinguished Service Award form the Florida section of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). He accepted the award at a joint conference of MAA and the Florida Two Year College Mathematics Association (FTYCMA) held Feb. 17 through 18 at Florida Atlantic University, Jupiter.
Mears has been at MCC and a member of MAA and FTYCMA since 1979. He has served as president of the Florida section of MAA and FTYCMA; as chair of the Statewide Course Numbering System Discipline Committee in Mathematics; and as a delegate to American Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges national conferences.
Mears has a doctorate degree in curriculum and instruction form the University of South Florida and a master's degree in mathematics from the University of Kentucky.
