MCC Venice Math Club First in Statewide Competition
(Bradenton, Fla., May 9, 2006) - The Manatee Community College (MCC) Venice Math Olympics team won first place in the small college division in statewide competition held in April at the University of North Florida (UNF), Jacksonville. It is the third year in a row an MCC team placed first in its division.
Co-sponsored by UNF and the Florida Two-Year College Mathematics Association, the day-long competition included individual tests and group work. Fifteen teams from community colleges across the state competed.
MCC's award-winning team members are Joy D'Andrea, Minh Luu, Brian McDonald and Cong Pham. D'Andrea, an Englewood resident, and McDonald, a Venice resident, plan to be teachers. Luu, a North Port resident, and Pham, a Venice resident, want to be engineers.
The team's achievement was recognized and Pham was named Outstanding Student in Mathematics at the college's 2006 Honors Convocation held April 28 at MCC Venice. The team coach is Assistant Professor Mary Beth Headlee.
