MCC Librarian Participates in National Conference
(Bradenton, Fla., June 12, 2006) - Meg Hawkins, Manatee Community College (MCC) information literacy librarian, has been invited to make a poster presentation about "Quantitative and Qualitative Methods of Assessment" at the American Library Association's (ALA) Annual Conference in New Orleans on June 24. She is the only poster presenter from a community college nationwide.
The poster presentations showcase model programs from the Association of College and Research Libraries Immersion Program experience. Hawkins participated in the highly competitive program on information literacy in Rhode Island in 2003. She also served on a national ALA committee on teaching and learning at community colleges for two years. This year, Hawkins was among four MCC winners of National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development awards for excellence.
At MCC, Hawkins coordinates other librarians in hands-on activities and teaches students how to use the library and the Internet and evaluate and use information. She also teaches an Introduction to Internet Research class. Hawkins was named Professional Educator of the Year by the Bradenton-Sarasota chapter of Phi Delta Kappa in 1998. She has a master's degree from the University of Michigan and is working toward a certificate of community college education at the graduate level from the University of Central Florida.
