MCC Fall Commencement Exercises to be Held Dec. 15

(Bradenton, Fla., Dec. 5, 2006) - Manatee Community College (MCC) Fall 2006 commencement exercises will be held at 7 p.m., Friday, Dec. 15, in Neel Performing Arts Center, located off 26th Street at 60th Avenue West, MCC Bradenton. Approximately 150, out of a total of 690 graduating students, will participate. Tickets are required.

MCC President Dr. Sarah Pappas will offer opening remarks and confer degrees. The guest speaker is Dr. Laurey Stryker, University of South Florida (USF) vice president and USF Sarasota-Manatee chief executive officer. Her 25 years of experience includes serving as Florida's Deputy Labor Secretary. Under her leadership, USF Sarasota-Manatee enrollment grew from fewer than 2,000 four years ago to 3,500. A new campus center opened in August and USF now offers courses at MCC Venice. The student speaker will be graduating sophomore Michael John Zdorow, 28, who is an associate pastor at Trinity United Methodist Church, North Port. He will attend USF Sarasota-Manatee. Long-term plans include earning a master's degree in divinity at Asbury Theological Seminary, Orlando. A member of Phi Theta Kappa honor society, Zdorow was active in MCC history, political science and environmental clubs.

Other program participants are Rip duPont III, chair, District Board of Trustees; Dr. John Rosen, vice president, academic affairs; Stephanie Cook, assistant professor, computing and engineering technology; Dr. Sheri Chejlyk, instructor, social and behavioral sciences; Peg Lowery, executive director, The Foundation for MCC Inc., and mace bearer; Dr. R. Warren Apple, organist; MCC Venice SGA president Paul Gaerlan; MCC Bradenton SGA President Carly McCullough; Rev. Don Nicholson, chaplain, Campus Ministries; and music student Lynee Price.
