50th Anniversary Celebration May 12 at Lakewood Ranch
(Bradenton, Fla., May 10, 2007) - Manatee Community College (MCC) invites area residents, MCC alumni and staff, and future students to join in a celebration of the college's 50th anniversary from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, May 12, at MCC Lakewood Ranch, 7131 Professional Parkway East.
The community celebration features MCC scholarship and gift-basket drawings, tours, family fun, and free food and drinks, including anniversary cake and ice cream. Participants include G.WIZ Hands-On Science Museum, Mote Marine Laboratory, Sarasota Fire Department, Sarasota County Lifeguards, Southeast Guide Dogs, Jungle Gardens, Suncoast Workforce Board and Manatee County Humane Society. Other highlights include refreshments by Bruster's Ice Cream, John Dough Bakery, MacAllister's, Chili's, MacDonald's, Publix and Sweetened Strawberry; kids' games and activities; crafts, live DJ with '50s music; hula hoop and limbo contests; MCC Wall of History; dance demonstrations; and chair massages.
Since the Center for Innovation and Technology (CIT) opened in January 2003 as the first building at MCC Lakewood Ranch, more than 66,000 people have attended events, seminars, staff development workshops, meetings and MCC classes ranging from noncredit skills training to college credit leading to a degree. MCC's Institute of Workforce Solutions, headquartered at the CIT, provides customized contract training. An ACT Center provides state-of-the-art testing and training programs using computers and is a portal for more than 2,000 online courses. Demonstrations of ACT classes, as well as ones offered by ed2go, the college's newest distance learning provider, will be given during the celebration event.
