Board Approves Presidential Profile & Begins Search Committee Selection

The Manatee Community College (MCC) District Board of Trustees, at its Oct. 15 meeting, took the first steps in the search for a replacement for President Dr. Sarah H. Pappas, who will retire June 30, 2008.

Working with consultant Dr. Jeff Hockaday and referring to input from community meetings held in October, trustees determined qualifications and a profile of traits and experience desired in the next president. The criteria will be used as the basis for an ad to run in November in national and local media.

The board is looking for a creative, visionary, energetic and ethical leader. Credentials will include an earned doctorate degree from a regionally accredited institution and at least five years of senior level leadership experience in higher education.

The trustees' second order of business was to choose representatives from the board and MCC personnel to serve on a search committee. Community and MCC student representatives will be chosen and a chair or co-chairs will be named at the board's Nov. 21 meeting.

Selected at the Oct. 15 meeting as presidential search committee members were:

  • Trustees Ron Allen and Beverly Beall.
  • Faculty members Dr. Ray Hundley, associate professor, fine and performing arts; Dr. Felix Rizk, associate professor, mathematics; and Gary Russell, professor, language and literature.
  • Administrators Peg Lowery, executive director, Foundation for MCC Inc.; and Dr. Idelia Phillips, director, career and technical education.
  • Career employee Joseph Loccisano, art gallery manager, fine and performing arts.

The committee's first organizational meeting will be Jan. 16, 2008. The new president is expected to be selected by April 30, 2008.

As the search process continues, a complete profile, job description, ad and supplemental information will be made available on the Presidential Search Web page, www.scf.edu/PresidentSearch.
