Percussion Duo Conducts Master Class at MCC
The Sylvia Smith Percussion Duo will conduct a master class that is free and open to the public from 1 to 2 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 14, in Neel Performing Arts Center off 26th Street at 60th Avenue West, Manatee Community College (MCC) Bradenton. The duo is noted for performing the music of Stuart Saunders Smith, one of America's most innovative composers.
The duo, Sylvia Smith and Ayano Kataoka, combine sound, language, movement and gesture in the unconventional works by award-winning Stuart Saunders Smith. The composer has received numerous grants and recorded for 11 West Records and other labels. His theatrical contemporary music works have been performed by musicians, actors and dancers. He also is a poet and the author of two books.
Sylvia Smith has performed at Merkin Hall in New York, at Rutgers University and throughout California. The founder, owner and editor of Smith Publications and Sonic Art Editions, publishing houses that specialize in contemporary Western art music, Smith has recorded for 11 West Records and O.O. Discs.
The first percussionist to be accepted into the Chamber Music Society Two residency program in New York, the versatile Kataoka has recorded for Respect Records and appeared with Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble in Carnegie Hall. She is a native of Japan and toured China as a marimbist at age 9.
